The Castaño family owns over 410 hectares of vineyards in the Yecla DO in southeastern Spain. Eighty percent of these vineyards are planted to the native Monastrell variety. Castaño symbolises the best of what southern Spain has to offer: rich, warm climate wines made from grapes grown at altitude and transformed into robustly modern wines. For several generations, Bodegas Castaño has been the pioneer in the region.
This wine which is aged in American oak casks for 6 months is from Las Gruesas and Pozuelo vineyards which are situated at an altitude 750 metres above sea level, representing 90 hectares in Yecla. This area has a very different microclimate from the rest of the region which is clearly continental. It has minimum temperatures of- 10ºC in winter and up to 42ºC in summer. The area has an average rainfall, with limited but torrential rains. The average age of the vines is 35 years old and the density is 1,600 vines per hectare.
Deep, cherry red in colour, with complex aromas of raspberry, mulberry and liquorice. On the palate it shows juicy blackberry flavours, squashy acidity, soft and rounded tannins, and a long finish.
