In 1885, Emile Giffard, a then pharmacist in Angers, carried out research on the digestive and refreshing properties of mint. From a particular variety of pepper mint, the “Mitcham” plant, he creates a pure, transparent, refreshing mint liqueur whose success is immediate.

Emile Giffard names his liqueur Menthe Pastille in reference to the taste of the mints that were very popular at the time and transforms his pharmacy into a distillery.
